Olive Oil! Don't bother with buying a bunch of pills and creams, just go to your kitchen and grab the olive oil!! It really works. I have suffered for years until a friend told me about this remedy. It shortens the life span of the cold sore, and takes the pain away as well. Plus it's totally natural. you have nothing to lose! Good luck :)

I've heard a lot about putting ice on it... and I've heard the Garlic thing as well. I just combine a few different remedies and so far it seems to be working. This morning I had a bump on my lip that was already pretty red on it's way to breaking open. I've been dabbing Nail Polish Remover with Acetone on it every hour on the hour and holding it on for as long as I can possibly stand the burn (1-2 minutes). I also have a bunch of already pealed garlic that I bought from Sams Club and froze a while back. So I've been cutting open one Garlic clove, and holding each frozen half on the bump until it melts completely and then using the other half until that melts. That, along with the Acetone seem to be helping because the swelling has already gone down considerably and the bump is almost gone completely as well.

I get cold sores about 3 times a year and always in the fall and winter. :P it sucks! anyways I take Lysine adn it works a bit to shorten the duration but its not wonderful. Im going to try the tea bags and also Witch Hazel. One thing i really like is ***Campho phenique**(** this stuff is AMAZING! it dries it up super fast and then sometimes it just ends up scabbing and peeling off.. sounds gross i know but trust me it works.. I put on a ton! like all through out the day. Thanks for the website and good luck everyone!

I have suffered from coldsores all my life! and not the dinky little ones that you can hardly see, I mean like half my lip swollen and painful and I have finally found something that works amazingly for me!
Lysine is always good but at night I put on a generous helping of "Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm" the little tin kind and i wake up with nearly nothing!
I've never been good at catching the tingling phase so I put it on when these suckers are full blown and it works miracles!!!! PLEASE TRY THIS IT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!

Hi, I also suffer from cold sores. Right now I have 3! 2 on my top lip and 1 on my bottom lip! They are awful! I have a prescription for Zovorax from my doctor, however I didnt find that worked. I have also tried Abrevia and Cold Sore FX. Abrevia didn't work I found, but Cold Sore FX did have somewhat of an improvement. I am going to try some of these home remedies and see how well they work! I am going to try the toothpaste trick first! I am also going to try Lysine too! Thanks for the help!

there is a lot of info to go through here and what i take from it is that everyone is different and so the same treatment may not work for everyone. i however have been getting cold sores since i can remember (thanks mom! haha). vitamin c really works wonders but only if taken with bioflavanoids. you need 1,000 mg vitamin c and 1,000 mg bioflavanoids taken together at first sign of an outbreak. if you take the vitamins in time you may stop the cold sore from forming. i also try to take them daily for prevention since timing is everything here. This really does work and i dont know what i would do without them. I do still get cold sores once in a while since i am a poor sleeper and like to party pretty hard on occasion. Coffee seems to be my biggest trigger right now. I try to watch my diet but i tend to enjoy a lot of the foods that cause outbreaks. Still, the vitamin c and bioflavanoids method works wonders. i prefer ester-c since it is non acidic and chewable vit. c since you dont even need water to take them. like i said though the bioflavanoids is key here. if you dont catch the lil bastard in time then the vitamins will at the very least help to keep the cold sore from getting real bad. when i do end up getting a sore though i have found that leaving it alone is the best thing for it. i must say though i have a hard time doing that and i ususally end up drying it out (popping it sometimes and then using alcohol). I tried the toothpaste from using this blog and it does to my surprise seem to be helping. There is no magic bullet for cold sores though that is for sure. Diet changes, vit. c and bioflavanoids, and good, clean living seem to be the closest thing to a cure that i have found. I hope this helps. Keep your head up people! Sometimes it feels like it but its not the end of the world. I have to remind myself of that every time i get one though.

I am on my 3rd cold sore. I have maybe had 3 inthe last 2o years. Trying Abreva per my sister swearing by it and delivered it to me yesterday, the first day, to start right away. There is so much info here. You which part scares me the most? I'm not sure about towels, showering, sleeping (in case I turn on it in the night), brushing teeth and toothbrush peorocol, washing my face for fear of touching and spreading doing any of the above. My anxious state which brought this on becomes hyper anxious, so that I can barely get my day started. How do you cope with grooming, eating, sleeping, etc?
