Mouth Cold Sores: Causes and Cures

cold sore pictureFirst off, is the “cold sore” inside or outside the mouth? If it’s inside the mouth then it’s much more likely that it’s a canker sore, not a cold sore, and the two are completely different and caused by two completely different things. On the TOP left is a cold sore on the outside of the mouth, whereas the picture directly below that is a canker sore on the inside of the mouth.canker sore picture A canker sore is actually an ulcer and not caused the Herpes Simplex Virus that causes cold sores. Go here for more information on canker sores: Wikipedia Article on Canker Sores. Now, if it is a cold sore then it’s an outbreak caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus, almost definitely the Type 1 strain (HSV-1), although it’s possible but very unlikely that it could be Type 2 (HSV-2), which is typically responsible for genital herpes. For more detailed information please see this article: What Is A Cold Sore? Basics of What a Cold Sore Is.

The Herpes Simplex Virus (both types) cannot ever be completely “cured” per se, because once the outbreak is finished the virus recedes back into the

nerve cells it originally infected until the next outbreak–usually once every year or two for people who have had it for a while, more often (sometimes as often as once every few weeks) for someone who just caught it. Various treatments include oral anti-virals such as

Acyclovir and Valacyclovir, topical prescription and non-prescription creams such as Abreva (whose effectiveness is iffy at best, in my opinion), as well as home remedies such as Witch Hazel, Lysine, Licorice (yes, really), Milk, Ice, Zinc, etc.

cold sore medicinesPersonally, I haven’t had much luck with the prescription treatments, the OTC (over-the-counter) creams aren’t any better, and some home remedies work and some don’t, and the effectiveness of them varies from person to person–this I learned from experimenting with various home remedies myself and amongst my friends, what worked for someone else wouldn’t necessarily work for me, or at least not as well, and vice-versa.  However, myself and other people, after years of on-and-off experimentation whenever we got

cold sores, and then comparing results, have come up with a short list of things that tend to work particularly well and fairly consistently, and we’ve found that all of them generally beat the normally prescribed treatments like pills and creams (although a couple of us actually got some of our best home treatments

from doctors, just to give credit where it’s due) due to the fact that some of them will often prevent a cold sore from ever emerging in the first place when it would have if we hadn’t taken the preventative measures we did. We’ve found that often, once you start feeling the tingling and irritation of an oncoming outbreak before it happens, if you’ll keep the site clean and dry by washing it once every 2 hours and then applying witch hazel or benzyl alcohol (witch hazel’s easier to get ahold of) with a q-tip every time after you wash, this will often stop it from ever emerging in the first place. Vitamin B-12, C, and possibly lysine also help.  I highly recommend you check this out and give it a try, as well, it’s the best cold sore treatment I’ve ever tried:

Something My Friend Concocted…

My best experience with home remedies is with something concocted by Grace, a close friend of mine, and I must say that this cold sore treatment has worked every single time for me (often inside of 24 hours), and even more impressive is I’ve seen it work on about 25 other people she’s tried it on, with very good consistency. She was so enthusiastic about her discovery that she has decided to turn it into an e-book, so I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I didn’t try to help her out a bit on my blog. One of the first women that we “experimented” on (she’s our close friend and was glad to give it a go), was Gretchen, who occasionally crosses the border from Wisconsin to come visit us, look at what she said:

“Grace,

I wanted to get a note to you to thank you for the information in your ebook. I must admit I was very skeptical when I read your instructions, but you were right on the money. My double bout with cold sores was gone after only 6 days. The best part of this entire program has been that to this point (3 months later), the cold sores have not returned. I can hardly believe it – thanks so much!”

Please go have a look at my friend Grace’s solution for the matter here: Cold Sore Freedom: Cold Sores Cured in 3 Days–I’ve personally tried this and it is currently my favorite method of handling my cold sores, and it’s not because it’s necessarily the fastest (I’ve found that if I drain, wash, and apply nail polish remover to a cold sore several times a day while keeping an ice cube on it the WHOLE day, about 50% of the time it’ll be gone in about 2 days, but it’s unreliable at best and you can’t do ANYTHING else that day but attend to your cold sore). It’s because it works EVERY TIME, often within the first 24 hours–3 days is more like the unlikely maximum, you’re much more likely to see it gone within 24 hours or so–and it only requires a few minutes of your time every day, so I highly recommend you give it a chance and if it doesn’t work then just get your money back, no harm no foul we’re all still friends, ok?
