Alright let’s quickly go over my favorite methods to heal a cold sore with (you think Jack Bauer over there gets cold sores? lol). Myself and my friends have personally experimented with literally hundreds of various remedies over the years due to our displeasure with the relative ineffectiveness of available prescription and OTC medications and treatments (which may, at best, reduce

the length of your outbreak by 1 to 2 days–not very impressive, really, now is it?). A cold sore is caused by the outbreak of an infection of the herpes simplex type 1 virus (aka “HSV-1″), which, once you’ve contracted the virus, it stays in the sensory nerve cells of |
your face, hibernating there only to break out into ghastly red crusty leaky cold sores once every few months or so (for more information check out: Cold Sore Blister: What is it, and how to treat it?).
Janie’s Top 5 Tips for Quick Cold Sore Annihilation
- Keep it clean and dry: wash it once every two hours with a wash cloth and soap, being sure to throw the dirty wash cloth in the laundry and use a new one each time to prevent further spreading.
- Put some carmex (this is the best in my opinion) or other lip balm over it to keep the fluid from leaking out and spreading–the wax will act as a sealant.
- Melt an ice cube over it for about 10 minutes every two hours after you wash it–this slows down the virus’s metabolism and makes it less likely to get worse and speeds healing time, plus it really helps with pain and irritation.
- Apply witch hazel or rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) with
a q-tip to it once every two hours–my friends and I have found this to usually be VERY effective at speeding up healing time (and if you do it early enough when it’s just a little red bump it will sometimes stop the cold sore dead in its tracks and keep it from ever emerging in the first place).
- Start taking lysine at 1000mg 3 times per day along with high doses of Vitamin C (follow directions on the bottle), lysine has been proven (and in my and my friends experience, it works) to speed healing time for cold sores and to go a long way to prevent them in the first place (see here for more info: Lysine: Cold Sores Treatment? Something My Friend Concocted…
My best experience with home remedies is with something concocted by Grace, a close friend of mine, and I must say that this cold sore treatment has worked every single time for me (often inside of 24 hours), and even more impressive is I’ve seen it work on about 25 other people she’s tried it on, with very good consistency. She was so enthusiastic about her discovery that she has decided to turn it into an e-book, so I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I didn’t try to help her out a bit on my blog. One of the first women that we “experimented” on (she’s our close friend and was glad to give it a go), was Gretchen, who occasionally crosses the border from Wisconsin to come visit us, look at what she said:
“Grace,
I wanted to get a note to you to thank you for the information in your ebook. I must admit I was very skeptical when I read your instructions, but you were right on the money. My double bout with cold sores was gone after only 6 days. The best part of this entire program has been that to this point (3 months later), the cold sores have not returned. I can hardly believe it – thanks so much!”

Please go have a look at my friend Grace’s solution for the matter here: Cold Sore Freedom: Cold Sores Cured in 3 Days–I’ve personally tried this and it is currently my favorite method of handling my cold sores, and it’s not because it’s necessarily the fastest (I’ve found that if I drain, wash, and apply nail polish remover to a cold sore several times a day while keeping an ice cube on it the WHOLE day, about 50% of the time it’ll be gone in about 2 days, but it’s unreliable at best and you can’t do ANYTHING else that day but attend to your cold sore). It’s because it works EVERY TIME, often within the first 24 hours–3 days is more like the unlikely maximum, you’re much more likely to see it gone within 24 hours or so–and it only requires a few minutes of your time every day, so I highly recommend you give it a chance and if it doesn’t work then just get your money back, no harm no foul we’re all still friends, ok?
